If I register for the Review Course, do I have to register for the exam separately?

Yes.  The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management requires that you submit your application at least 6 weeks prior to the exam date.  An application and information on the exam process can be found at www.ihmm.org.

When and where is the next CHMM Review Course and Exam?

The Review Course will be offered in conjunction with Kennesaw State University on their campus at 1000 Chastain Road in Kennsaw, Georgia, a thriving suburb of Atlanta, Georgia.

The next scheduled Review Course is October 18-21, 2005.  The exam is scheduled to be offered on October 22, 2005.

If there are an insufficient number of enrollees, the chapter reserves the right to cancel the review course.

What can I do to prepare for the Review Course?

It is recommended that prior to attendance of the review course, participants purchase and review the current edition of the Hazardous Materials Management Desk Reference. This is an excellent resource that can be used in preparation for the Review Course and CHMM exam.  Copies are available through this chapter via John Scarano.

What is the CHMM credential?

The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) has offered the CHMM credential since 1984. This certification provides a nationally recognized standard for identifying professionals who have demonstrated knowledge and competence in hazardous materials management. The CHMM program is accredited by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards.

The IHMM reviews applications for eligibility to sit for the CHMM exam. Certification as either a senior or master level CHMM is contingent upon education, experience and a passing score on the CHMM exam. You must submit an application to the IHMM at least 6 weeks prior to the examination date in order to sit for the exam! You can get the application by contacting IHMM at 11900 Parklawn Drive, Rockville, MD 20852, telephone (301) 984-8969. Additional requirements and more detail about the exam can be obtained by visiting www.ihmm.org.

Why take the CHMM Review Course?

The candidate must pass a rigorous exam on hazardous materials management including:

1) Laws & Regulations including: RCRA, TSCA, OSHA, CWA, CAA, CERLCA, SARA, FIFRA, etc.
2) Compliance Standards & Work Practices
3) Science & Technology including: chemistry & physics of hazardous materials, biological effects, etc.
4) Management of Hazardous Materials Programs

The Review Course can help you prepare by:

1) providing a structured study format
2) provide practice answering example questions in subject matters outside your areas of expertise
3) giving you access to qualified instructors

The CHMM Review Course provides the environmental professional with the knowledge to comply with health, safety, and environmental guidelines. Course completion will prepare participants to sit for the CHMM exam.

Even if you don't take the exam, the Review Course provides an excellent overview for hazardous materials managers.

Does taking the review course guarantee I will pass the CHMM exam?

No. The review course is meant to be an aid to students who are preparing to sit for the CHMM exam.

However, our structured learning format, use of qualified instructors, and access to simulated test taking questions helps students identify those areas that may require additional study.

Neither the instructors, nor the exam proctor, know the actual test questions. All test questions are developed by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Managers (IHMM), the developer and governing body of the CHMM credential.

Am I required to take the Review Course?

No. Whether or not you take the Review Course, you can sign up to sit for the exam through the IHMM.

Occasionally, students who take the Review Course will take the exam at a later date. Some students will attend the Review Course just for the good overview it provides for hazardous materials management.
